“To deny representation for the LGBT as a marginalized sector is outright discrimination. To invoke religion to violate their rights is sheer bigotry.”

This is the statement of Rep.Liza Maza of Gabriela Women’s Party today as she scored the COMELEC decision rejecting the petition for registration of Ang Ladlad Party as a sectoral party list representing the Filipino lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

“COMELEC’s decision of junking Ang Ladlad’s petition smacks of discrimination and mocks the organizing efforts of Filipino lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. This is a clear violation of the right of persons, especially from the marginalized sectors, to be involved in the political processes. It is reflective of the prevailing culture where homophobia and discrimination prevails.”

In the Commission on Election’s eight-page resolution, it stated that the petition of Ang Ladlad party does not conform to the Catholic faith and that the petitioner tolerates immorality which offends religious beliefs. If further stated that should COMELEC grant the petition, it will be exposing the Filipino youth to an environment that does not conform to the teachings of our faith.

“Is the COMELEC now an extension of any religious group?” Maza asked.

The Gabriela solon vowed to support the organizing initiatives of the LGBTs and their advocacy against discrimination in workplaces, schools, and public or private institutions; against hate crimes and rights abuses; and for the recognition and respect of their rights and interests . ###
