Maza raises questions on libel case filed against blogger
Senatorial candidate Rep.Liza Maza of Gabriela today raised questions on the libel suit filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) at the request of former Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Esperanza Cabral against a blogger named “Ella” who exposed and criticized the DSWD’s alleged inability to deliver relief goods to typhoon victims and hoarding of relief items in its warehouses on October 21, 2009 at the height of relief operations for victims of tropical storm Ondoy.
“We fear that this case will be used against individuals who would only want to express their views and sentiments about current administration and its agencies. It appears that they are testing the waters at the expense of bloggers who exercise their freedom of expression through cyberspace,” Maza said.
Maza said that it would be more sensible if DSWD counters the allegations of the blogger point blank instead of running after her through a libel case.“If indeed the allegations of hoarding and corruption were not true, then DSWD should present their official records to clear their name,” Maza said.
“It is imperative that government officials should respect diverse views of people instead of attacking them. The internet blogs and other social networking sites serve as a venue for individuals, especially the youth to express their opinion and ideas. It would only appear antagonistic if even this very limited space would be hindered,” Maza said. ###
