Maza scores Arroyo gov't on attack vs progressive candidate in Aklan

Gabriela Party-list representative and Makabayan-Nacionalista senatorial bet Liza Maza condemned the most recent attack against a member of progressive partylist organization running for a local post in Aklan on Friday.

Re-electionist town councilor Fernando Baldomero, who is also a Bayan Muna provincial coordinator and is campaigning for senatorial candidates Liza Maza and Satur Ocampo, survived a grenade lobbed at his house by two motorcycle-riding men, but his family suffered from shock and fear.

"This is a string of extrajudicial killings perpetrated by the Arroyo administration versus activists and critics. This is also part of the government's repression against progressive party-lists like Bayan Muna, Gabriela, Anakpawis and Kabataan," Maza said.

Maza said that this recent case gives weight to the US State Department report that extrajudicial killings and other forms of harassment against leftist and human rights activists committed by local security forces continue to be a major problem in the country.

"Even the international community has taken notice and set the alarm; We are returning to a period when political killings were a norm," Maza warned. ###
